In Heidegger's philosophy, the concept of Lichtung (clearing) is a central metaphor representing the process through which beings and truths become manifest. Heidegger envisions a dense forest where a clearing allows light to penetrate, symbolizing how beings emerge into openness where they can be understood and interacted with. This metaphorical clearing is the ontological space where Being is disclosed and where unconcealment (truth) occurs. For Heidegger, human beings (Dasein) are intimately connected to this clearing, actively engaging with the world to reveal meaning and truth. The Lichtung emphasizes the dynamic nature of understanding, situated within the broader context of the world and its horizon.

In contrast, Nachman of Breslov’s teachings, rooted in Hasidic spirituality, present a similar idea through the practice of hitbodedut (self-seclusion), which involves solitary prayer and meditation in nature. This practice aims to create a mental and spiritual clearing, enabling a person to connect with God and uncover deeper truths. Nachman emphasizes clearing away inner obstacles to allow divine light to penetrate the soul, revealing hidden divine wisdom and truth. True perception, according to Nachman, arises from faith and purity of heart, creating a space where divine insights and truths are perceived. Both Heidegger and Nachman focus on creating an openness where truth and understanding can emerge, highlighting the transformative potential of engaging with deeper existential and spiritual realities.
